Encrypted backup and sharing
Last updated: 2026-10-25
There is no cloud sync and no account. Backups and sharing are things you do on purpose, and every copy that leaves the app is encrypted unless you deliberately choose otherwise.
Two kinds of backup
Your iPhone backup. When you set up the vault, you choose whether its encrypted files may be included in your normal iPhone backup to iCloud or a computer. Neither answer is chosen for you, and you can change it in Settings. Only encrypted data goes into the backup. The keys for Face ID, PIN and pattern stay on the iPhone, so a restored vault opens with the master password first.
A backup file. In Settings, under backup, you can export the whole vault as one encrypted file, photos and videos included, and save it wherever you like through Files. The backup file is protected by the master password you use when you make it.
Restoring
Choose the backup file and enter the master password it was made with. The app checks the whole backup, including every photo and video, before it replaces anything. If a check fails, your current vault is left as it was.
Changing your master password later does not change older backup files: each one still opens with the password that applied when it was made. Keep track of which backups you trust, and keep your old phone until you have checked what was restored.
Sharing one item
You share one item at a time, never the whole vault.
- Encrypted. The item is saved as a password-protected file. The recipient opens it in Encrypt My Data with the password, which you give them some other way, for example in person or by phone. The app shows how strong the password is, and never stores it.
- Unencrypted. You can also share the content as plain text, a note or the photo itself. The app warns you every time, because the recipient, and any app or service on the way, can read it.
What goes with it
Before you share, you see what the item will carry with it, such as its title, tags and, for encrypted files, dates, and you can leave these out. Folders and internal identifiers are never shared. Location and camera details inside photos and videos are removed by default; if removal cannot be done, the share stops rather than sending them.
What it is not
Backups restore a vault; they do not keep two devices in sync. A copy you share or export is handled by the people and services you send it to.
