Photos and videos

Last updated: 2026-10-25

Keep photos and videos in encrypted albums that open only inside the vault. Nothing is decrypted to storage to show or play them.

Adding photos and videos

  • The camera in the app. What you take goes straight into the vault and is not saved to your photo library.
  • Photos. The system picker gives the app only what you select, without access to the rest of your library.
  • Files. Pick an image or video from Files or another storage app.

Photos and videos you pick from your library are copied into the vault, and the originals stay in Photos. Delete them there yourself, and remember that iOS keeps deleted items in the Recently Deleted album for a while.

Albums and browsing

An album can hold several photos and videos, in the order you choose. The Photos view shows everything with the newest first, and you can filter it by folder and tag. Photos and videos have their own folders, separate from your other items. You can zoom, pan and swipe between them.

On the free tier, an album counts as one item, however many photos and videos it holds.

Details stay with them

The original file is kept as it was, with its capture date, camera and location if it has them. You can see these details in the app and search them. A location is shown as coordinates, without looking it up on an online map.

Videos

There is no limit on length or size, only on the free space on your iPhone, which the app checks before an import. Videos play straight from the encrypted file: only the part being watched is decrypted, in memory. Playback stops when the vault locks, when you leave the app and while the screen is being recorded. AirPlay and picture in picture are turned off for vault videos.

Thumbnails

The small preview images are encrypted too, and are never written to storage unencrypted. They are not part of backups; the app makes them again after a restore.

Saving out and sharing

Saving a photo or video back to your library, or sharing it unencrypted, takes it out of the vault's protection, so the app warns you first. Location, camera and date details are removed by default, unless you choose to keep them for that share. An encrypted share keeps the photo or video protected by a password.
